Fresh major Barcelona housing protest backs 11 November strike

Thousands of people marched through central Barcelona to demand the right to housing and to support the general strike called for 11 November. The protest focused on trade union organisation and criticism of property policies. Housing protests were also continuing in other cities, including Valencia, while the future of the Sol encampment in Madrid remained unresolved.

Housing demonstrations have become more visible amid high rents, difficulties in buying a home and pressure on major cities. In Spain, housing is a constitutional right, but making it effective depends on laws, budgets and public policies across several levels of government.

For landlords and tenants, a protest does not in itself change contracts or regulations. It can, however, increase political pressure to approve or amend measures on rents, protected housing or market regulation.
