Average five-year fixed mortgage rate reaches 6% in the UK

The average rate on new five-year fixed mortgages in the United Kingdom has reached 6% for the first time in three years. The increase follows several weeks of rising costs for lenders, which are passing part of that pressure on to mortgage offers.

In the British market, mortgages with a fixed rate for an initial period are common, after which the loan is reviewed or renegotiated. The price of those deals depends on interest rate expectations, banks’ funding costs and perceived risk.

For people with property or borrowing in the UK, such an increase can make new purchases or refinancing more expensive. It does not have an automatic effect on the Spanish market, although it is a reminder that mortgages remain sensitive to financing costs.
